3. Lesson Procedure 75 min
Activity: Write on the board: “My Alma mater is Harvard, and my Magnum opus is yet to be written.”
Ask the class: “Did you understand every word? These aren’t originally English! Today, we are learning the secret language of academics, lawyers, and diplomats.”
Elicit prior knowledge: ask students if they know what “etc.” (et cetera) or “vs.” (versus) stands for.
Instructor Input: Group the words into three linguistic families on the board.
- Latin (Legal/Formal): Ad interim, bona fide, erratum, ex gratia, in toto, in camera, prima facie, postmortem, sine die, status quo, verbatim, viva voce, alma mater, alumni, magnum opus.
- French (Social/Culinary/Admin): Adieu, bon-voyage, bonhomie, chauffeur, en route, en masse, faux pas, fait accompli, laissez faire, liaison, rapport, tete-a-tete.
- Italian (Arts/Drama): Dramatis personae (and note cognito though Latin).
Meaning Focus: Clarify tricky distinctions: Adieu vs. Bon-voyage; Erratum vs. Faux pas.
Setup: Divide class into 4 teams. Give each team 35 cut-out word strips and 35 meaning strips (mixed).
Task: Teams must match the foreign word to its correct meaning as fast as possible.
Bonus: For every correctly matched pair, the team must shout out the origin (Latin/French/Italian) to earn a double point. The fastest and most accurate team wins.
Part A (Individual): Fill-in-the-blanks worksheet (10 sentences). Examples:
- CEO called a private meeting __________ without media. → in camera
- His lateness was a major __________ at dinner. → faux pas
- We stop at Lyon __________ to Paris. → en route
Part B (Pairs): One student plays a “Diplomat”, the other a “Journalist”. The journalist asks questions; the diplomat must answer using at least 5 phrases (e.g., “Is the deal final?” – “Yes, it’s a fait accompli.”)
On a small paper, each student writes:
- One word they already knew.
- One new word they learned today.
- One word they think is most useful for a job interview.
