A syllable is a unit of spoken sound in a word. A syllable usually contains a vowel sound and may have consonant sounds before or after it.

One useful learning method is to say a word slowly and listen for its spoken beats.

Clap-and-count method

1. Say the word naturally.
2. Say it slowly.
3. Clap or tap once for each clear syllable.
4. Count the beats.

1. Monosyllabic words

A word with one syllable is called monosyllabic.

2. Disyllabic words

A word with two syllables is called disyllabic.

3. Trisyllabic words

A word with three syllables is called trisyllabic.

There is no single rule that correctly divides every English word. Pronunciation and dictionary conventions matter. The following patterns are useful learner guidelines.

Listen for the vowel sounds rather than simply counting vowel letters.
