Parts of Speech
A learner-friendly courseware for understanding how words work in sentences.
1. What Are Parts of Speech?
Words do different jobs in a sentence. The group a word belongs to, based on the job it does, is called its part of speech.
Riya names a person, quickly tells how the action happened, and old describes the door.
2. The Eight Parts of Speech

3. Noun – The Naming Word
A noun names a person, place, animal, thing or idea.
Meera, Rahul, Chennai, Kerala, Ganga, elephant, school, friendship
Proper: Kavya, India
Common: girl, city
Collective: team, crowd
Abstract: kindness, courage
Answer: Vikram, football, playground.
4. Pronoun – The Noun Replacer
A pronoun is used instead of a noun, usually to avoid repetition.

5. Verb – The Action or State Word
A verb can show an action, a state or something that happens.
Neha runs every morning.
Rohan opened the window.
My father is a teacher.
The children were happy.
6. Adjective – The Describing Word
An adjective describes a noun or pronoun. It may tell us what kind, which one or how many.
Answer: clever, young, difficult.
7. Adverb – The Word That Adds Detail
An adverb commonly gives more information about a verb, but it can also modify an adjective or another adverb.

8. Preposition – The Relationship Word
A preposition shows a relationship between a word and another part of the sentence. It often expresses place, time or direction.

9. Conjunction – The Joining Word
A conjunction connects words, phrases or clauses.

10. Interjection – The Feeling Word
An interjection expresses a sudden emotion, reaction or feeling.
Other examples: Oh! Alas! Oops! Bravo!

12. How to Identify a Part of Speech
- Read the whole sentence.
- Find the word’s job. Is it naming, replacing, acting, describing, modifying, relating, joining or expressing feeling?
- Check nearby words.
- Remember context. One word may have different functions in different sentences.
