1. Clause vs Phrase: The Big Idea
A
clause is a group of words built around a subject and a predicate/finite verb. A
phrase is a group of words that works as a unit but does not contain a complete subject–finite-verb relationship.
Clause: Ravi opened the door. → Ravi = subject; opened = finite verb.
Phrase: near the door → no subject–finite-verb pair.
Exam Rule: Clause = subject + predicate/finite verb relationship. Phrase = a meaningful word group without that complete relationship.
தமிழில்: கிளாஸ் (Clause) என்பது பொதுவாக Subject + Predicate/Finite Verb கொண்ட சொற்களின் தொகுப்பு. Phrase என்பது முழுமையான Subject–Finite Verb உறவு இல்லாத சொற்களின் தொகுப்பு. தேர்வில் முதலில் Subject + finite verb உள்ளதா என்று பாருங்கள்.
2. Find the Subject and Finite Verb
The fastest test is to look for a
subject and a
finite verb. A finite verb shows tense or agrees with the subject.
Priya sings beautifully. → Priya / sings → clause.
singing beautifully → no finite verb → phrase.
after Priya arrived → Priya / arrived → clause.
Exam Rule: Ask: Who/what is doing or being something? Then find the finite verb. If both form a grammatical unit, you have a clause.
தமிழில்: முதலில் “யார்/எது?” என்று Subject-ஐ கண்டுபிடிக்கவும். அடுத்து Tense-ஐ காட்டும் Finite Verb-ஐ கண்டுபிடிக்கவும். இரண்டும் இருந்தால் Clause ஆக இருக்கலாம்.
3. Independent and Dependent Clauses
An
independent clause can stand alone and express a complete thought. A
dependent clause has a subject and verb but depends on another clause for complete meaning.
Arun completed the work. → independent.
because Arun was tired → dependent.
When Meena reached home, → dependent.
Exam Rule: Independent = complete thought. Dependent = has subject + finite verb, but cannot normally stand alone in that use.
தமிழில்: Independent Clause தனியாக முழுமையான கருத்தைத் தரும். Dependent Clause-ல் Subject + Verb இருக்கும்; ஆனால் அது மற்றொரு Clause-ஐ சார்ந்திருக்கும்.
4. Phrase: A Meaningful Word Group
A phrase acts as one unit but does not make a subject–finite-verb clause. Examples:
in the garden,
the tall boy,
after lunch,
to win the prize.
The tall boy won the race. → “The tall boy” is a noun phrase.
after lunch → phrase; there is no subject + finite verb pair.
Exam Rule: Do not reject a phrase just because it contains a verb-like word. Non-finite forms such as to study, studying, and broken can occur inside phrases.
தமிழில்: Phrase என்பது ஒரு meaningful unit. அதில் to study, studying, broken போன்ற non-finite verb forms இருக்கலாம்; ஆனால் அவை finite clause-ஐ உருவாக்காது.
5. The One-Minute Identification Test
Use this sequence:
- Underline the possible subject.
- Circle the finite verb.
- Ask whether the subject and finite verb belong together.
- If yes → clause; if not → phrase.
because Karthik was late → Karthik + was → clause.
because of Karthik’s delay → no finite verb → phrase.
Exam Rule: Subject + finite verb = clause. No such pair = phrase. Then, if it is a clause, decide independent or dependent.
தமிழில்: இந்த 4 படிகளைப் பின்பற்றுங்கள்: Subject கண்டுபிடி → Finite Verb கண்டுபிடி → இரண்டும் தொடர்புடையதா? → Clause/Phrase என முடிவு செய்.
6. Types of Phrases You Should Recognise
Common phrase labels help you understand sentence structure.
- Noun phrase: the new library
- Prepositional phrase: in the library
- Infinitive phrase: to read a book
- Participial phrase: smiling at the child
- Gerund phrase: Reading storybooks
Exam Rule: Focus first on Clause vs Phrase. Type the phrase only when the question asks for it.
தமிழில்: முதலில் Clause/Phrase வேறுபாட்டை கற்றுக்கொள்ளுங்கள். கேள்வி கேட்டால் மட்டும் Noun Phrase, Prepositional Phrase, Infinitive Phrase போன்ற வகைகளை அடையாளம் காணுங்கள்.
7. Clause Markers: Who, Which, That, Because, If, When
Many dependent clauses begin with words such as
who, which, that, because, if, when, although, while.
The girl who won the prize is Ananya. → dependent clause.
I stayed home because it rained. → dependent clause.
We will go if the bus arrives. → dependent clause.
Exam Rule: A marker alone does not make a clause. Check for the subject + finite verb after it.
தமிழில்: who/which/that/because/if/when போன்ற தொடக்கச் சொற்கள் Dependent Clause-ஐ அறிய உதவும். ஆனால் அவற்றுக்குப் பிறகு Subject + Finite Verb உள்ளதா என்பதையும் சரிபார்க்க வேண்டும்.
8. Clause or Phrase? Compare Similar Meanings
Pairs with similar meanings are excellent for exam practice.
Clause
because Ravi was ill
when Meena arrived
after the teacher entered
Phrase
because of Ravi’s illness
on Meena’s arrival
after the teacher’s entry
Exam Rule: The clause has a subject–finite-verb relationship; the phrase expresses the idea without that relationship.
தமிழில்: ஒரே கருத்தை Clause அல்லது Phrase ஆக எழுதலாம். Clause-ல் Subject + Finite Verb இருக்கும்; Phrase-ல் அந்த அமைப்பு இருக்காது.
9. Clause, Phrase and Complete Sentence
A complete sentence may contain one or more clauses and may also contain phrases.
Ravi studied in the library. → one independent clause + a prepositional phrase.
When Priya arrived, Ravi smiled. → dependent clause + independent clause.
In the library, Ravi studied. → prepositional phrase + independent clause.
Exam Rule: Do not call every group of words a sentence. A sentence normally has at least one independent clause.
தமிழில்: ஒரு Sentence-ல் Phrase-களும் Clause-களும் சேர்ந்து இருக்கலாம். ஒரு முழுமையான Sentence-க்கு பொதுவாக குறைந்தது ஒரு Independent Clause தேவை.
10. Common Errors and Exam Traps
- Trap 1: “to play cricket” is a phrase, not a finite clause.
- Trap 2: “because Arun was tired” is a dependent clause.
- Trap 3: “in the morning” is a phrase.
- Trap 4: A word like working is not automatically a finite verb.
- Trap 5: A dependent clause still has a subject and finite verb.
Exam Rule: Do not use meaning alone. Use structure: subject + finite verb relationship first.
தமிழில்: அர்த்தத்தை மட்டும் வைத்து முடிவு செய்யாதீர்கள். முதலில் அமைப்பைப் பாருங்கள்: Subject + Finite Verb உறவு உள்ளதா?
11. Samacheer-Style Practice
Samacheer Kalvi material introduces clauses as groups containing subject and predicate/verb, distinguishes independent and dependent clauses, and gives examples with village-festival contexts. Practice the same skill with Indian classroom contexts.
which is performed during village festivals → dependent clause.
during village festivals → phrase.
because the bus was late → dependent clause.
because of the late bus → phrase.
Exam Rule: Exam habit: underline the subject and finite verb before choosing Clause or Phrase.
தமிழில்: Samacheer Kalvi-யில் Clause-க்கு Subject + Predicate/Verb மற்றும் Independent/Dependent வேறுபாடு முக்கியமாக கற்பிக்கப்படுகிறது. அதே திறனைத் தேர்வு முறையில் பயிற்சி செய்யுங்கள்.
12. Revision, MCQs and Mastery Check
Master Rule: Clause → subject + finite verb relationship. Phrase → no complete subject + finite-verb relationship.
Quick examples: “after Ravi came” = clause; “after Ravi’s arrival” = phrase; “Ananya won” = independent clause; “because Ananya won” = dependent clause.
Exam Rule: Remember the three-step chain: Clause/Phrase → if Clause, Independent/Dependent → if asked, identify the phrase/clause type.
தமிழில்: நினைவுச் சங்கிலி: முதலில் Clause/Phrase → Clause என்றால் Independent/Dependent → கேள்வி கேட்டால் அதன் வகையை அடையாளம் காண்க.

Source Alignment
This courseware follows the Tamil Nadu Samacheer Kalvi treatment of clauses and phrases: clauses are introduced through subject and predicate/verb, with independent and dependent clauses distinguished; phrase examples are used for meaningful word groups without the clause relationship. The Tamil Nadu Government’s Higher Secondary scheme states that English syllabi and textbooks are prescribed by SCERT, and the official HSE question-paper pattern includes transformation/synthesis and conditional-clause grammar work.
Prepared as original teaching material; examples and practice questions are newly written for classroom use.
