தமிழ் உதவி: ஒரு sentence-ல் யார் / எது? என்று கேட்பது Subject-ஐக் கண்டுபிடிக்க உதவும். அவர்/அது என்ன செய்கிறார் / எப்படி இருக்கிறார்? என்பதைக் கூறும் பகுதி Predicate.

Samacheer Kalvi Connection

Samacheer grammar materials treat clauses as groups containing a subject and predicate, and sentence-pattern work asks learners to identify structures such as SV, SVO and SVC. citeturn0search2 citeturn0search8

The Tamil Nadu examination question-bank material also shows direct sentence-pattern identification, for example identifying the pattern of “Ram’s father is a lawyer.” citeturn0search24

Why learn Subject + Predicate first? Once students can find the subject and the predicate, identifying sentence patterns and understanding clauses becomes much easier.

Lesson 1 — What Is a Sentence?

A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought.

Basic idea: Subject + Predicate
SentenceSubjectPredicate
Ravi plays cricket.Raviplays cricket.
Priya reads a book.Priyareads a book.
The children are happy. The childrenare happy.
தமிழில்: Sentence-ன் அடிப்படை அமைப்பு Subject + Predicate. Subject யாரைப் பற்றிப் பேசுகிறோம் என்பதைக் காட்டுகிறது; Predicate அந்த Subject பற்றிய செய்தியைக் கூறுகிறது.

Lesson 2 — What Is the Subject?

The subject is the person, animal, thing or idea that the sentence is about. It commonly performs the action or is described by the predicate.

SentenceSubjectQuestion to ask
Arun runs fast.ArunWho runs fast?
The dog barked loudly. The dogWho/what barked?
Honesty is valuable.HonestyWhat is valuable?
Quick test: Find the verb first. Then ask Who? or What? before the verb.

Lesson 3 — What Is the Predicate?

The predicate tells us what the subject does, what happens to it, or what it is like.

SubjectPredicate
Meenawon the prize.
Karthikis very intelligent.
The birdsare flying in the sky.
My fatherworks in Chennai.
தமிழ் உதவி: Predicate என்பது Subject பற்றி சொல்லப்படும் பகுதி. அது verb-ஐ மையமாகக் கொண்டிருக்கும்.

Lesson 4 — Simple Subject and Complete Subject

The simple subject is the main word naming the subject. The complete subject includes the simple subject and all words that describe or modify it.

SentenceSimple SubjectComplete Subject
The clever boy won the race.boyThe clever boy
My younger sister Priya sings well.sisterMy younger sister Priya
The tall trees near our house are swaying.treesThe tall trees near our house
Exam trap: Do not choose the nearest noun as the subject automatically. Find the word that controls the main verb.

Lesson 5 — Simple Predicate and Complete Predicate

The simple predicate is the main verb or verb phrase. The complete predicate includes the verb and all words that complete or modify the predicate.

SentenceSimple PredicateComplete Predicate
Ravi plays cricket every evening.playsplays cricket every evening
Ananya has finished her homework.has finishedhas finished her homework
The students are studying in the library.are studyingare studying in the library

Lesson 6 — Compound Subjects

A sentence may have two or more subjects sharing one predicate. Such a subject is called a compound subject.

Ravi and Arun play football.
Subject: Ravi and Arun | Predicate: play football
Priya, Meena and Ananya prepared the chart.
Subject: Priya, Meena and Ananya | Predicate: prepared the chart
Words such as and commonly join compound subjects.
தமிழில்: ஒரே Predicate-ஐ இரண்டு அல்லது அதற்கு மேற்பட்ட Subjects பகிர்ந்து கொண்டால் அது Compound Subject.

Lesson 7 — Compound Predicates

A sentence may have one subject performing two or more actions. This creates a compound predicate.

SentenceSubjectCompound Predicate
Ravi opened the door and switched on the light.Raviopened the door and switched on the light
Meena sang and danced.Meenasang and danced
Karthik washed the car and cleaned the windows.Karthikwashed the car and cleaned the windows

Lesson 8 — Subject–Predicate Agreement

The subject and verb must agree in number and person. This is a foundation for correct sentence construction.

CorrectIncorrectReason
Ravi plays cricket.Ravi play cricket.Singular subject → singular present verb.
The boys play cricket. The boys plays cricket.Plural subject → base verb in simple present.
My sister is ready. My sister are ready.Singular subject → is.

Samacheer grammar guidance also emphasises that a verb agrees with its subject in number and person. citeturn0search11

தமிழ் உதவி: Subject singular/plural என்பதை பார்த்து Verb-ஐ சரியாகத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்க வேண்டும்.

Lesson 9 — Questions, Commands and Unusual Word Order

Questions

In questions, the subject may appear after an auxiliary verb.

Are the students ready?
Subject = the students; Predicate = are ready.
Did Ravi finish the work?
Subject = Ravi; Predicate = did finish the work.

Commands

In an imperative sentence, the subject you is often understood rather than stated.

Open the door.
Understood subject = you; Predicate = open the door.
கவனம்: Questions-ல் word order மாறினாலும் Subject-ஐ auxiliary verb என்று தவறாகக் கருத வேண்டாம்.

Lesson 10 — Subject, Predicate, Clauses and Sentence Patterns

Every independent clause has a subject and a predicate. Understanding them helps learners recognise common sentence patterns such as SV, SVO and SVC.

PatternExampleSubjectPredicate
SVRavi sleeps.Ravisleeps
SVOPriya reads books.Priyareads books
SVCArun is a doctor.Arunis a doctor
SVAMeena lives in Madurai.Meenalives in Madurai

Samacheer sentence-pattern exercises use patterns such as SV, SVO and SVA, making subject–predicate identification a useful foundation skill. citeturn0search8
