📘 Lesson 1 — What is a Progressive Tense?

A progressive (continuous) tense describes an action that is in progress around a particular time.

TenseBasic patternExampleTamil idea
Present Progressiveam/is/are + V-ingPriya is reading.இப்போது நடந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் செயல்
Past Progressivewas/were + V-ingPriya was reading.கடந்த நேரத்தில் நடந்து கொண்டிருந்த செயல்
Future Progressivewill be + V-ingPriya will be reading.எதிர்கால குறிப்பிட்ட நேரத்தில் நடந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் செயல்
Memory key: Progressive = BE + V-ing. The form of BE changes with the tense.

📗 Lesson 2 — Present Progressive

Form

I + am + V-ing
He / She / It + is + V-ing
We / You / They + are + V-ing
Ravi is studying English now.
Meena is preparing for the test.
The students are writing their answers.

Uses

  • Action happening now: Arun is speaking.
  • Temporary action: Priya is staying with her aunt this week.
  • Changing situation: The city is growing quickly.
  • Near-future arrangement: Karthik is meeting his teacher tomorrow.
தமிழ்: “-கொண்டிருக்கிறான் / -கொண்டிருக்கிறாள் / -கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்” என்ற கருத்து பல நேரங்களில் progressive meaning-ஐத் தரும்.

📗 Lesson 3 — Present Progressive: Negative & Questions

TypePatternExample
PositiveS + am/is/are + V-ingAnanya is singing.
NegativeS + am/is/are + not + V-ingAnanya is not singing.
QuestionAm/Is/Are + S + V-ing?Is Ananya singing?
Exam check: Do not use does/do with a progressive form. ❌ Does Ravi is reading? → ✅ Is Ravi reading?

📕 Lesson 4 — Past Progressive

Form

I / He / She / It + was + V-ing
We / You / They + were + V-ing
Ravi was reading when Priya called.
The children were playing when it started to rain.

Uses

  • Action in progress at a past time: Meena was studying at 8 p.m.
  • Background action: The birds were singing.
  • Interrupted action: Arun was walking when he saw the accident.
  • Two simultaneous past actions: Priya was cooking while Ravi was cleaning.
தமிழ்: கடந்த காலத்தில் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட நேரத்தில் ஒரு செயல் தொடர்ந்து நடைபெற்றுக் கொண்டிருந்தால் Past Progressive பயன்படும்.

📕 Lesson 5 — Past Progressive: Negative & Questions

TypePatternExample
PositiveS + was/were + V-ingKarthik was writing.
NegativeS + was/were + not + V-ingKarthik was not writing.
QuestionWas/Were + S + V-ing?Was Karthik writing?
கவனம்: Singular subject → was; plural subject → were. I → was in the past progressive.

📙 Lesson 6 — Future Progressive

Form

Subject + will be + V-ing
At 8 p.m. tomorrow, Ravi will be studying.
This time next week, Priya will be travelling to Bengaluru.

Uses

  • Action in progress at a particular future time.
  • Expected ongoing activity: Meena will be working at noon.
  • Polite inquiry about a future plan: Will you be using the computer this evening?
தமிழ்: எதிர்காலத்தில் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட நேரத்தில் செயல் நடைபெற்று கொண்டிருக்கும் என்பதை Future Progressive காட்டுகிறது.

📙 Lesson 7 — Future Progressive: Negative & Questions

TypePatternExample
PositiveS + will be + V-ingArun will be travelling.
NegativeS + will not be + V-ingArun will not be travelling.
QuestionWill + S + be + V-ing?Will Arun be travelling?
Shortcut: Future Progressive = will + be + V-ing. Never write ❌ will be goes / ❌ will going.

⏰ Lesson 8 — Time Expressions & Meaning

Present ProgressivePast ProgressiveFuture Progressive
now, at present, at the moment, today, this weekat 6 p.m. yesterday, while, when, at that timeat this time tomorrow, at 8 p.m. next Friday, this time next week
Priya is studying now.Priya was studying at 8 p.m. yesterday.Priya will be studying at 8 p.m. tomorrow.
தமிழ் தேர்வு குறிப்பு: time expression ஒரு முக்கிய clue. ஆனால் clue மட்டும் பார்க்காமல் sentence-ன் meaning மற்றும் subject-ஐயும் சரிபார்க்க வேண்டும்.

🔎 Lesson 9 — Progressive vs Simple

Compare the meaning

SimpleProgressive
Ravi reads every evening.
வழக்கமான செயல்
Ravi is reading now.
இப்போது நடைபெறும் செயல்
Meena studied yesterday.
முடிந்த கடந்த செயல்
Meena was studying at 7 p.m.
அந்த நேரத்தில் நடந்து கொண்டிருந்த செயல்
Arun will study tomorrow.
எதிர்கால செயல்
Arun will be studying at 8 p.m.
அந்த நேரத்தில் நடைபெறும் செயல்

Think like an examiner

  1. Is the action a habit/fact or in progress?
  2. What time is being referred to?
  3. Is there a specific moment?
  4. Look for be + V-ing.
Example: “Every day” usually points to Simple Present, while “now” usually points to Present Progressive.

📚 Samacheer / Previous-Paper Preparation Note

Tamil Nadu Class 12 English model papers follow a four-part paper structure, with Part I containing 20 one-mark objective questions and later parts containing directed questions. Current collections also provide multiple years of Class 12 public English papers for practice. citeturn0search4turn0search1

Published Samacheer-oriented grammar practice includes questions asking learners to supply appropriate tense forms. One example set asks learners to choose forms such as have been waiting, had already left, and had been looking; this shows why learners should understand the time relationship in a sentence rather than merely memorise endings. citeturn0search12

மாணவர் தேர்வு யுக்தி: முதலில் time clue-ஐ கண்டுபிடி → செயல் எந்த நேரத்தில் நடக்கிறது என்பதைப் புரிந்து கொள் → BE-ஐத் தேர்வு செய் → இறுதியில் V-ing சரியாக உள்ளதா என்று பார்க்கவும்.
