Lesson 1 – What is a Noun?

A noun is a word used to name a person, place, animal, thing, idea, quality, feeling or material.

தமிழில்: Person (நபர்), Place (இடம்), Animal (விலங்கு), Thing (பொருள்), Idea/Quality (கருத்து/பண்பு), Feeling (உணர்வு), Material (பொருள்/மூலப்பொருள்) ஆகியவற்றின் பெயரைச் சொல்லும் சொல் Noun / பெயர்ச்சொல்.
Person: Ravi, teacher, doctor
Place: Chennai, school, village
Animal: elephant, dog, peacock
Thing: book, bicycle, phone
Quality: honesty, kindness, bravery
Material: gold, water, cotton
Sentence: Ravi carried a book to school.
Nouns: Ravi, book, school.
Quick test: Ask “Who?” or “What?” about the sentence. The answer may contain a noun.

Lesson 2 – Types of Nouns

Lesson 3 – Concrete and Abstract Nouns

Concrete Noun

Something that can be experienced through the senses.

Examples: book, flower, bell, mango

தமிழ்: புலன்களால் உணரக்கூடிய பெயர்.

Abstract Noun

An idea, quality, feeling, state or concept.

Examples: knowledge, honesty, happiness, bravery

தமிழ்: நேரடியாகக் காண/தொட முடியாத கருத்து, பண்பு அல்லது உணர்வு.

Compare: book → concrete noun; knowledge → abstract noun.
Try it: “Can I experience it with my senses?” If yes, it is likely concrete; if it names an idea or quality, it is likely abstract.

Lesson 4 – Countable and Uncountable Nouns

Countable

Things that can be counted individually.

Examples: one book, two apples, three students.

Useful words: a/an, many, few, several.

Uncountable

Things generally treated as a mass or substance rather than separate units.

Examples: water, rice, information.

Useful words: much, little, some.

Lesson 6 – Gender of Nouns

Example: The teacher praised the student. The nouns “teacher” and “student” can refer to either a male or female person, so they are common-gender nouns.

Lesson 7 – Possessive Nouns

A possessive noun shows ownership, relationship or association.

A specific or already identified noun.
தமிழ் உதவி: a/an பொதுவாக ஒரு குறிப்பிட்டதல்லாத ஒருமை எண்ணக்கூடிய பெயர்ச்சொல்லுடன் வரும். the குறிப்பிட்ட நபர்/பொருளைக் குறிக்கப் பயன்படும்.

Lesson 9 – Noun Formation

New nouns can often be formed from verbs and adjectives by adding suffixes or changing word forms.

Lesson 10 – Noun Functions in a Sentence

Subject

Arun plays cricket.

Who performs the action?
Object

Arun plays cricket.

What receives the action?
Subject Complement

Meena is a doctor.

Noun after a linking verb that identifies/describes the subject.
Object of a Preposition

The book is on the table.

Noun following a preposition.
தமிழ் உதவி: ஒரு பெயர்ச்சொல் வாக்கியத்தில் Subject, Object, Subject Complement அல்லது Preposition-க்கு பின் வரும் பெயராகச் செயல்படலாம்.

Lesson 11 – Noun Phrases

A noun phrase is a group of words built around a noun.

Examples:
the clever boy
a beautiful garden
the girl in the blue dress
Find the head noun: In “the clever boy”, boy is the main noun. The other words give more information about it.

Lesson 12 – Compound Nouns

A compound noun is formed when two or more words work together as a noun.

A collective noun names a group of people, animals or things.

Grammar note: In many standard English contexts, a collective noun can take a singular verb when the group is viewed as one unit: “The team is ready.”
